Police constable shoots trader dead
Standard Correspondents
A police constable attached to Turkana District Commissioner’s office yesterday gunned down a coffin-maker in Lodwar town at about 7am.

The constable, who ran beserk, pumped several bullets at the middle-aged man killing him instantly.

Mr Joseph Ondero Ongundi had just opened his workshop when the officer approached him and engaged him in a bitter argument.

The officer then drew out his pistol and shot him four times, killing him instantly.

It was not immediately known, what led to the shooting, but sources at the scene claim that the officer had differed with one of Ongundi’s workers at a disco-theque over the weekend.

The officer was, however, arrested by fellow Administration Police officers on patrol and handed over to the Lodwar police station where he is locked up.

The police confirmed the incident saying investigations had been launched.

Several local residents expressed shock at the shooting.

They, however, said they did not understand the motive behind the killing. The body was moved to the Lodwar District Hospital mortuary.
