Nocturnals: A Midnight Companion

The once quiet Pacific City has been enshrouded in darkness and cloaked in evil. The only thing standing against the tide of villains that run rampant are Doc Horror and his band of heroes like The Raccoon, Starfish and The Gunwitch. This is the setting of the Nocturnals comic book and the midnight companion, which is a compilation of material from the Nocturnals universe as well as giving some source material to run a campaign in the Mutants and Masterminds universe.

This sourcebook does go into detail into the world of Nocturnals as well as the various heroes and villains that inhabit this world, so setting up a campaign in this setting would be less work for the GM. And the art that graces the entire book is completely stunning as it is all done by Dan Brereton. There is also a completely original 18-page comic that is in included in this sourcebook!

However there is a bit of problems that I had with this book. Firstly while there is a lot of content describing the various characters and settings of the Nocturnals universe there isn’t a lot of game information included to make this a worthy expansion for any Mutants and Masterminds player. For $29.95 you feel like you’re not getting a role playing expansion for Mutants and Masterminds you feel as if you’re getting a art book that has a bit of source material for the Nocturnals universe with some role playing material thrown in as a afterthought.

For the people who like the comic book and want to learn more about the Nocturnals universe than this is definitely a book that you need to have on your shelf. But if you are looking for a complete setting with more rules, characters and such then you might want to look elsewhere as you are not going to get enough material to grace the $29.95 price tag and it may be cheaper to get one of the comics first to see if this might be a setting that you want to run as a campaign for the Mutants and Masterminds Universe. Hi all,

Another review of Nocturnals can be found in the latest issue of Fictional Reality at www.fictionalreality.org

Also missed was the campaign world for Nocturnals is the first I have seen for M&M; that covers a low power level (5-8, I think). And covers it very well...

Not all artwork is by Dan. This error (which is pretty big given that two page spreads of artwork by others contain only short sentences at the top on white space that talk about how Dan liked seeing others do versions of his characters thereby clearing indicating they are not his) suggests the reviewer has "read over" but not "read" the book. This is fine, but should be noted in the review (of course it could be the book was read, and this was just an oversight).

For those of you wary about the gaming content, you have stats for over FIFTY npcs, if I remember correctly (the Nocturnals, ten pre-generated PCs, friends, and tons of adversaries statted out). It''s just that all the stats are placed primarily in two places and grouped together. You should be aware that these stats mean that this sourcebook contains almost as much as books such as Crooks! and surely beat anything being put out by Wotc in its Star Wars expansion line. You also get twenty or so new feats with optional gun rules. You get a sample character creation as well. All in all, I disagree with the reviewer on the amount of RPG content. I just think putting it all in one to two places makes it "feel'' like there is less content. However, when one counts what IS in there, you see that there is plenty.
