Obviously, everyone makes their own decision, but if a game has won an award it brings it on to my radar quicker.

But - the awards that mean something come from the people, not from industry profesionals.

Not without knowing beforehand what selection and voting criteria ANY "award" uses.

Attention, yes. Money, not necessarily. I am more likely to at least look at games which have won awards (or at least got nominated). The decision to buy is based entirely on how much I like the product.

Awards are meaningless to me. I've bought games that had won Origins awards and they were total $#@%##%$^&%$^&$&^%$&^#%#^%$#^%@^%$&^#&^$ not to mention ^%$^&#%$#&^%$$(*()(*(*&$$#%$%$#. Whew, glad I got that off my chest.

The awards only mean they were recongnized by their peers in the industry and the peopke always vote with the money..

There is a gap between the games that those in the industry love, and those which most people play. As an interested outsider to the industry, I often buy and read games that people consider "clever" or well written, but I have actaully only played ten different RPGs, two of which where fan games now long out of print (Dr. Who RPG by FASA and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles by Palladium.)

People in the Industry love Ars Magicia, Unknown Armies, and Feng Shui. I have read the last two of these, and they are very clever mechanically and have interesting settings, but never played any of them.

I suspect these awards have more to do with the insiders praising fine craftsmanship by their peers, not if the product is going to be popular.

Game awards like the ENnies ( RPG awards at Gen Con ) have more of an influence on me, as the winners are selected by the fans. Peer awards in almost any walk of life often denegrate into "non-intentional" glad-handing and return of favor politics.

While some nominees and winners of Origins Awards are obvious results of ballot-box stuffing, other games are games which industry members consider genuinely good games. The fan votes are a little less biased.

Should you buy a game just because it won an Origins Award? No! Should you give it a second look if your first look was cursory? Yes.

Buy the games you like, but if a lot of people like a game, perhaps there is sometimes a reason.

Attention? Yes. If industry professionals like something, that's a data point for me to consider. Money? Maybe. Still, getting my attention amid a glut that, let's face it, includes a lot of low quality material, is important. After getting burned a couple of times, I'm very careful what I spend money on.
