so what caused the Redfern riot?Redfern riot: All clippings + background
'We give notice to the Australian government both State and Federal that the continual denial of basic human rights and on-going POLICE HARASSMENT against Aboriginal people have not been addressed in this country. This is evidenced by the DEATH of a young boy.'

    past picks
    Australian Aborigines: Their future welfare
Reprinted from The Times, August 8, 1922. "Mrs. Bates is not the only one who is concerned with the welfare of the aborigine. It is a problem which is becoming increasingly difficult to the authorities."
A cruel case of absurd historical denial
To deny the existence of evidence of a 19th century crime might seem merely mischievous. However, to speak of Aboriginal testimony about their 20th century suffering as "false memorysyndrome" and "confabulation" is something else again.
    Human Rights in Contemporary Australia
Despite its rather grand title, this presentation will be a relatively modest attempt to set out the key challenges for human rights in Australia as I see them at the outset of my term as Human Rights Commissioner. Let us begin with a quick survey of the state of human rights internationally and in Australia today.
John Howard: The dispiriting face of Middle Australia
Many people, particularly outside Australia, make the mistake of underestimating Howard. He has scant charisma and no commanding presence; his eyebrows are unruly, his voice an irritating whine. Visitors seduced by images of a diverse, progressive nation are startled to find it run by a grey man who belongs in the 1950s.
Money that's black and white and spent all over
The dollars may appear black, but there are plenty of "grey" areas. Not all native title dollars are being used to Aboriginal advantage.
Max Dupain, Olive Cotton and the Aboriginal Tent Embassy: A Three Dog Night
Some men spoke of pinstriped blacks in well paid jobs, too cozy to remember the real struggles. How money compromised the bravest of men. They told me that the new Parliament House land site is a traditional sacred birth site for Aboriginal women, and how important sacred land is for them. The birth of a child had meaning for these Aboriginal people, and me, but that significance was overridden by government bureaucrats and developers.

Support the Stolen Wages campaign. From 1904 to 1987, the Queensland Government withheld or underpaid wages earned by Aboriginal workers; a fraction has been offered as a settlement. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.
