Intergovernmental Organisations

• United Nations
  The United Nations bodies deal in many diverse areas affecting Indigenous Peoples including human rights, environment, health, trade, labour, biodiversity and cultural heritage to name a few. The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights is based in Geneva and currently co-ordinates the Nations United Working Group on Indigenous Populations (UNWGIP).
  
  
  
• Commonwealth
  The Commonwealth is a unique family of 54 developed and developing nations around the world. Commonwealth Secretariat is based in London. The Commonwealth hold meetings of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meetings every 2 years. The Commonwealth has a process of participation of non-governmental organisations, which include a commonwealth human rights and Indigenous peoples' organisations.

  25 April, 2002 - Cultural Survival - A decade awash in genocide and deadly conflict has passed since Jason Clay lamented that "it is impossible for concerned activists and scholars to agree on which cases constitute genocides, much less how interested people would go about documenting them." The learning curve when it comes to genocide, however, is conspicuously uneven. The challenge lies not in cultivating and maintaining an awareness of the phenomenon -- a task the mass media has demonstrated itself more than capable of handling -- but in recognizing its universal implications.
• Indigenous Peoples in International Law
  July 31, 1997 - Cultural Survival - The international system's contemporary treatment of indigenous peoples is the result of activity over the last few decades. This activity has involved, and been substantially driven by indigenous peoples themselves. Indigenous peoples have ceased to be mere objects of the discussion of their rights and have become real participants in an extensive multilateral dialogue that also has engaged states, NGOs, and independent experts.
