Encyclopedia entry for 'Jeff Phillips' LETTER:

StylePop

History
Western Australian-born pop singer Jeff Phillips first came to public attention in 1966 when he compered Perth television show Club 17 (following original compere Johnny Young's departure). In 1968, he relocated to Melbourne and signed to Festival Records. His debut single, a cover of The Shirelles' `Baby It's You'/`I Want to Meet Her', reached #21 in Melbourne and #34 nationally during December 1968.

Phillips was unable to sustain his chart career, but remained in the public eye as compere of his own television series, Sounds Like Us, for the ABC. The series lasted until the end of 1970. Then, in April 1971, Phillips took over from Ross D. Wyllie as compere of the O-Ten Network's Happening '71. In the meantime, Phillips had issued two more singles on Festival, `Everything I Touch'/`I'm Coming Home Cindy' (March 1969) and `I'm in Love with You'/`Wrong or Right' (April 1970), and one for the Generation label, `I Want to Be Famous Like My Dad'/`A Love of Your Kind' (September 1970).

Phillips continued as host of Happening '72, but then in 1973 travelled to the UK where he concentrated on club work. He issued a version of the John Paul Young hit single `Yesterday's Hero' for the UK market. In all, he issued three singles on the Philips label, `Yesterday's Hero', `Crying in the Middle of the Night'/`Saturday' (1976) and `Here You Come Again' (1977), plus two on United Artists, Vanda and Young's `Superman'/`The Other Side' and `Shake a Hand'/`Watch My Baby Rock'n'Roll'. He achieved a modicum of success with appearances on television variety shows like the Rolf Harris Show and Seaside Special. During the late 1970s, Phillips spent time in Los Angeles before returning to Australia. He issued two more singles, `L.A. Reggae'/ `Just Another Pretty Face' (May 1980) and `Desire'/ `Sleep with the Angels' (November 1981). Since that time, Phillips has appeared in television and radio commercials.

In 1985, he scored a role in the Australian stage production of the Andrew Lloyd-Webber musical Cats. He appeared on the Australian Cast recording album of Cats (on EMI) alongside Marina Prior, Debra Byrne, David Atkins and John Wood.
