Fire Fighters
are the bravest of the brave. They are people
who risk their lives time and again
to rescue people caught in fires and to save property by putting fires
out.
They train almost
constantly to improve their skills and to learn new ways to fight fire
which is a menace to all. Unfortunately, each year many fire fighters
lose their lives protecting us and our property.
Physical training
and good health are necessary to fire fighters because they must sometimes
carry heavy burdens, including people, down ladders and from burning buildings.
THE OLD BOWLING ALLEY
The old bowling
alley caught fire yesterday. Its lacquered wooden lanes burned fiercely
feeding flames that climbed high above the avenue that was clogged with
fire trucks and equipment. Because the building was only one storey,
it was not too difficult to raise the ladders and cherry pickers to focus
the fire hose streams on the flames and the roof.
However, the
roof could not be saved. The tar and wood burned quickly. And
much of the roof fell into the interior of the building. Crowds of
people were kept back by the police while the fire fighters did their work.
The fire fighters made a search of the building to be sure that no one
was inside and in danger. However, such a search was itself extremely
dangerous because the flammable nature of the building made it burn quickly.
Therefore, no matter how quickly the fire fighters searched the burning
building, they were in danger of being trapped by the fire the whole time.
Fortunately,
they completed their search and got out of the building quickly and without
any of them being injured. Everybody who had been inside got out
before the fire fighters arrived. The fire fighters then manned the
hoses and carried them to the fire to put it out as quickly as possible.
However, it
took many hours to control the fire so large was it due to the lacquered
wood inside. When it was over, the building was a complete loss and
its remaining walls had to be taken down before they fell and hurt somebody.
Nevertheless, thanks to the fire fighters nobody was hurt.
