Let's face it: heavy metal attained perfection in the early 70's, with the release of the the classic Black Sabbath albums. The self titled debut album "Black Sabbath" established the band as a force to be reckoned with, and "Paranoid" followed in 1970.
From the first few chords, that are unlike anything ever heard before, you know that there is something special happening. Lead guitarist Tony Iommi lays down incredibly heavy and gloomy riffs that are complex, but will still etch into your brain forever. Bill Ward's exceptional, fast paced, and powerful drums are revolutionary for the rock-genre. Geezer Butler's bass is fast paced and ripping.
And who could forget Ozzy Osbourne's gloomy, melancholic lyrics that are to this day legendary, in terms of meaning, and questioning society and ourselves. Themes of Black Sabbath's lyrics are death, nuclear holocaust, destruction, satan, religion, love, and many more. PLEASE - don't let this list shock you!!!! The lyrics are not evil, they do not contain backwards messages or satanistic preachings. This is a common misconception about Black Sabbath. The lyrics are merely pointing out the state of the world at the time (Vietnam war, cold war, etc.), and when listened to carefully convey a message of love, and thinking for yourself.
"Just remember love is life, and hate is living death.
Treat your life for what's it's worth, and live for every breath."
So, if you call yourself a heavy metal fan, then get "Black Sabbath" and "Paranoid", and all the other Black Sabbath albums for that matter, and find out for yourself, why Black Sabbath, after all these years is still the world's greatest heavy metal band. You will find yourself discovering a kind of music, a time, a feeling, that will never leave you. These two albums are in every way phenomenal, every song stands out on it's own, but as a grouping they are the epitamy of heavy metal. Songs that stand out from the bunch are: "Black Sabbath", "The Wizard", "War Pigs", "Paranoid", "Electric Funeral", "Fairies Wear Boots", and "Behind the Wall of Sleep"
P.S.: I wrote this review because I found an apparent lack of reviews that cover quality metal bands. Sure, Fred Durt's (I'm merely using it as an example) latest disk may sound powerful at first, but when you look beneath the surface, it's material crumbles, due to the lack of meaning, intelligence, and and the fact that virtually every heavy metal song, in some form, has already been written by the greats of this genre: AC/DC, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Metallica, and the godfathers of all metal: BLACK SABBATH
