New Tunes

By John M. James

My favorite new CD of the moment is When Cupid Meets Psyche by the enigmatically monikered (The Real) Tuesday Weld. Just picturing the actress Tuesday Weld in Thief with James Caan or Sex Kittens In College is enough to make me warmly tingle all over, but this newly released Kindercore Records CD isn't reaching back into 1960s and 1970s iconology -- these musical sights are set on a much deeper time trip into the 1920s and 1930s big band Swing of your grandfather's 78 rpm records, looped into a clever mobius strip with modern-day loops and electronic beats. The solo entity behind (The Real) Tuesday Weld is Londoner Stephen Coates, whispering the story of failed love in his lush Serge Gainsbourg vocal delivery, blending modern chill-down Electronica with easy listening into what he calls "antique beat" or "swing-onica."... The Cure have announced they'll release a new greatest hits album in mid-November. Tasty enough with 16 New Wave classics and two new studio tracks, the Elektra Records release has the real gems tucked away in the initial pressing that features a limited-edition bonus CD. That second CD, Acoustic Hits, promises all-new unplugged recordings of many of these same greatest hits like "Close To Me" and "A Forest." Look for a new DVD/VHS video release to follow a few weeks later, collecting past videos and these new acoustic sessions. ... The Who are all over the DVD revolution these days with two new state-of-the-art digital video releases. The Rhino Records imprint has just reissued Quadrophenia, the classic 1979 feature film that introduced America to the scooters 'n raincoats, Mods vs. Rockers world of working class Britain in 1964. The new DVD features an audio commentary track by director Franc Roddam, a film restoration feature that puts the old print up to this new remaster, a This Is Mod Culture documentary with details on Mod fashion, and an animated location that maps the film's Vespa assault route with modern day footage. Also just released is the band's Royal Albert Hall concert from last November, a benefit performance to support the United Kingdom's Teenage Cancer Trust. The star-studded affair features Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, Noel Gallagher of Oasis, Kelly Jones of Stereophonics, Paul Weller of The Jam, and violinist Nigel Kennedy. The two-DVD or two-video set will also include rehearsal footage and other goodies.
