August 18, 2003 --
There were many unsung heroes during the tumultuous Blackout of 2003 - and here's your chance to tap them for a New York Post Liberty Medal Award.
The nominating process for our annual competition, which honors courageous New Yorkers from all walks of life, was supposed to wrap up on Friday.
But the city's massive power outage showed thousands of selfless New Yorkers at their very best - and that's what the spirit of the Liberty Medals is all about.
So The Post now reopens the nominations for two weeks starting tomorrow, when you'll again find a form to salute your hero.
You may know somebody who helped save lives, or devotedly assisted those in need, when the lights went out Thursday afternoon.
And they are exactly the kind of everyday, hidden heroes that make the Big Apple the greatest city in the world.
There are 10 different categories, which include medals for leadership, courage, community, freedom and lifetime achievement. Look for nomination forms every day in New York's favorite newspaper and at nypost.com beginning tomorrow.
