August 4, 2003 --
The winners of the Post's second annual Liberty Medals, the ordinary heroes who make New York so extraordinary, will be honored at the people's house - Gracie Mansion.
The reception will be held Oct. 2 for the men, women and youth who symbolize the city's generous heart, resolute courage and visionary spirit at the historic home Archibald Gracie built in 1799.
"In New York, we live among unsung heroes. Citizens who make sacrifices for their fellow New Yorkers without seeking fortune or fame," Mayor Bloomberg said.
"Their motives are simply to do the right thing, and it is a privilege to join The Post to honor the people that make this New York what it is, a city of heroes."
The Post is asking readers to tell us all about the heroes who give their all in 10 different categories - from Community and Lifetime Achievement to Young Heart (for youth under 17), to one each for the city's educators, Bravest and Finest.
The official nomination form is available on our pages or at NYPOST.com. Entries are being accepted through Aug. 15.
The winners, who will be chosen by a panel of prominent judges, will receive the silver medal of Liberty's Torch created last year by graphic artist Milton Glaser, renowned for creating the "I ò NY" logo.
Last year's inaugural award ceremony was also held against the backdrop of the landmark that has been home to every mayor since Fiorello La Guardia except the present one.
Bloomberg considers Gracie Mansion the "people's" mansion and uses it for city business meetings and for events for community and civic groups.
