October 2, 2003 --
Tonight we’ll be singing the praises of the unsung heroes at the heart of the Big Apple at the New York Post’s second annual Liberty Medals award ceremony. Ten of the city’s heroes will take their turn in the spotlight at Gracie
Mansion where they’ll be honored at a reception hosted by Mayor Bloomberg and Post publisher Lachlan Murdoch.
Post readers nominated all the candidates for Liberty Medal honors and a distinguished panel of judges selected the shortlist of 32 finalists profiled on the following pages. Tonight, 10 of these finalists - winners in the 10 medal categories - will be saluted.
TV talk show superstar Regis Philbin will again emcee the gala and guests will include Gov. Pataki and Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau.
Many of the judges on the panel who chose this year’s winners will be present, including Police Commissioner
Ray Kelly, Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta, Jessica Seinfeld and Miramax Films cochairman Harvey Weinstein.
All 10 winners will receive the Liberty Medal, created especially for The Post by renowned graphic designer Milton Glaser.
