Denzel Washington

Director Carl Franklin's breezy crime thriller, Out of Time, stars Denzel Washington as a small town Florida chief of police whose decision to help a girlfriend, no matter the risk, puts his life and career in jeopardy. Out of Time is a reunion for Franklin and Washington, who worked together before on Devil in a Blue Dress, an adaptation of the Walter Mosley novel starring Washington as an ex-G.I. working as a private investigator in 1948 Los Angeles. Things change, careers move on; Washington joins Franklin as a filmmaking peer. After directing his own feature, Antwone Fisher, Washington realizes he now watches movies differently.

"I've probably seen more movies in the last year since I directed a picture," he says. "I've been watching them out of fear or for theft. I watched One False Move and a lot of Scorsese films. I've never realized how hard the job was. You really look at films in a different way. I look back at Do the Right Thing and you look at how Spike put the shots together. How economical Spike was. He didn't have a lot of money and there was a lot of set-up for one big shot. I was trying to steal from him, too."
