Basically dance

By Kathy Valin

(L-R) Jason McCollum, Sarah Berch and Joshua Stayton in the SCPA's Nutcracker

Need gifts for the dance lover in your life? Jeff Wilson at Clifton's cozy New World Bookshop (513-861-6100) recommends Suki Schorer's On Balanchine or Writing in the Dark by Arlene Croce, a collection of her critical essays for The New Yorker. Former BalletMet dancer and UC grad Mikaela Ross (now in the development department of New York City Ballet) suggests The New York City Ballet Workout, a trendy phenomenon available in video or DVD from www.nycballet.com. Another tasty workout option -- Pilates-evolved floor barre classes -- can be sampled at the Otto M. Budig Academy of Dance locations under the supervision of Jacqui Haas (513-621-5219). ... Of course, there's the sweetest dance goodie of all, tickets to a NUTCRACKER performance. THE SCHOOL FOR CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS' Dance Ensemble offers a charming mini-version in SCPA's Family Holiday Show (along with Meridian 8 and Baby Grands, two singing groups) this weekend and Dec. 15-16 . Info: 513-632-5900. ... THE CINCINNATI BALLET also cracks the "Nut" with a series featuring evening shows and matinees beginning Dec. 15 plus a "Tour de Sweets" ball and kids' luncheon. Info: 513-621-5219 ... After savoring closing night of the Cincinnati Ballet's FALL FESTIVAL, I can't help -- like Oliver -- wanting "More, please!" In "Finger Prints" Jay Goodlett was exemplary, and the fine cast included Christi Capps, Chandra Moss, Tong Schusheng and the very adept Cheryl Sullivan. In Daniel R. Simmons' "L'Esprit de Sept," Rene Micheo (whose balances were only slightly marred by a few hops) proved that liquid grace can be more technically challenging than fast twirls; his six ladies ate up the tricky, spirited variations. Can't wait for more from Meridith Benson, who was Odette in the sumptuous "Swan Lake, Act II." Finally, in "Aqualarco," Anna Reznik and Alexei Kremnev were again dazzling in technique. The joyful, collaborative spirit they displayed was breathtaking, drawing bravos from the kinesthetically aroused viewers.
