Jeffrey Gaines

Though he's been releasing albums since 1992, singer/songwriter Jeffrey Gaines has never quite received the commercial success that his music warrants. For his latest release, the recent Always Be (Artemis Records), Gaines makes his strongest bid yet. Gaines' sound is an engaging mix, falling somewhere between Elvis Costello and Peter Gabriel, with a tasteful touch of classic Soul thrown in for good measure. Gaines and producer Kevin Killen (Elvis Costello, Peter Gabriel, Paula Cole) recorded Always Be in just two weeks, tracking it live in the studio without a ton of overdubs. The stripped down approach befits Gaines' to-the-heart approach and captures the spirit of his live shows, where he reportedly shines brightest. Gaines also shows his strength as a song interpreter, turning in riveting performances of Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" (which has been enjoying solid radio success) and Ewan MacColl's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face."

With Stevie Nicks at Riverbend on Wednesday.
