Julian Lennon is, bottom line, a good songwriter, a fact that is often overlooked and diluted thanks to his famous surname. After a resplendent, top-selling debut with 1984's Valotte, Lennon floundered a bit artistically and commercially. This year Lennon got his own VH-1 Behind the Music, but, most impressively, he has also released an ace Pop album with Photograph Smile (Fuel 2000), a record stacked with lovingly crafted songs which Lennon injects with radiant harmonies and trademark twists that make the songs jump from the stereo. A very "adult" album, the record occasionally suffers from an overly earnest sappiness in a couple of ballads, but all is forgiven with such unforgettable songs as "Day After Day," "Believe" and "Good To Be Lonely." While always a pretty advanced writer, Lennon has moved to the point where he can still sound both mature and vital, writing songs whose hooks can grab underground Pop fans as easily as they can the post-Baby Boomers.

At Bogart's on Wednesday with The Push Stars.
