A whole slew of artists will be on hand for the ARTISTS REACHING CLASSROOMS (ARC) opening at the American Book Company on March 4. This Taft Museum program places real artists in schools to talk about their work, show slides and generally inspire young hopefuls. The result is some awesome imagination from all around the city and the most upbeat opening in town. 241-0343.

In our own version of "a small world," LORI SIEBERT of Siebert Design was one of the artists involved with the ARC program this year. She was able to let students in on an art career which not only pays the bills, but keeps a firm hold on the "fine" aspects of art. Siebert Design is currently exhibiting a selection of client work from their 10 years in the biz at the Chidlaw Gallery in the Eden Park Art Academy building. Odds are you may not know every Rembrandt by sight, but talking lizards and walking candy are familiar to everyone. That's what commercial art does. 562-8777.

What is happening to outdoor art fairs? This used to be a great venue for new artists and crafts people to get feedback on their work, sell cheaply without overhead and provide a great inexpensive day out for whole families. So, this week comes the prospectus for the MEMPHIS ARTS FESTIVAL charging $225-$425 per space and a list of fees, excluding food, travel and lodging, that totals an additional $206. The highest individual prize being offered is $2,000. It doesn't take a tax expert to project prices on the art sold as being higher than most fine art in galleries to cover costs. Do I hear a move to "put on our own show in the barn"? Publicity can be had very inexpensively. Maybe it's time for some enterprising arts group to take up the cause. But if Memphis is still your choice, get your entry blank at 902-761-1278.
