925 Dayton St.

Address: 925 Dayton St., West End

Owner: Dale Mallory

Value: $27,800

Year Built: 1900

Comments: From his living room window a few doors away, Dale Mallory can see the vacant building he owns at 925 Dayton St. The building has been under two city orders for repairs since 1996.

Mallory, president of the West End Community Council, recently acquired the building from the Cincinnati Metropolitan Housing Authority. He says he hasn't received notices of code violations that were mailed.

Although the fading gray, five-bedroom house is boarded up, it's still in good condition, according to Mallory.

"You guys are going to put me in the paper for that?" he says. "There are worse buildings."

Mallory says he plans to turn the building into an art gallery with his cousin, artist Gilbert Young.

Mallory formerly owned the building at 1022 Dayton St., which he rehabbed and sold. He says he is committed to the West End community, the neighborhood in which he grew up.

The city of Cincinnati has given Mallory an extra two weeks to fix code violations because of his postal problems, according to Dave Schneider, an inspector with the Department of Buildings and Inspections. If Mallory fails to comply, he will be cited to the housing docket of Hamilton County Municipal Court, Schneider says.

The violations against the building are minor and Mallory told inspectors he will comply with the city's orders, according to Schneider.

BLIGHT OF THE WEEK is an effort to highlight the problem of abandoned buildings -- and who's responsible for them.
