Rumors, Lies and General Misunderstandings
· Local Garage Rock greats The Greenhornes have released a new, self-titled album on New Jersey's Telstar Records (available on 12-inch vinyl, as well as CD). The group will celebrate by playing a record release show at The Comet on Sunday. Music starts around 10 p.m. They will start a tour at the end of the month in support of the new release. · On Saturday night, there will be a unique show at Mt. Adams Pavilion. Headliners The Stapletons were forced to find a substitute for openers Pike 27, who had to back out after guitarist Bob Sheets broke his ankle. Filling in for the band will be the impressive songwriters lineup: Swarthy, Chuck Cleaver (of The Ass Ponys) and Pike's own Dave Purcell.
· There will be a local music business panel discussion on Tuesday at the York Street Café in Newport starting at 7 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Chicago branch of The Recording Academy (who put on the Grammys) and will feature a panel on marketing and promotions. Participants include the Cincinnati Post's Rick Bird, the Enquirer's Larry Nager, Matt Sledge from 97X, Jim Farmer of Deary Me Records and a handful of others. · Like lots of people in tight spaces? Thursday night, Reggae kings Admiral Walker and eclectic troubadour Ric Hickey (with his band Loose Wrecks) will be cramming 'em into the cozy confines of Cody's Café. This marks AW's first show at the venue; Hickey plays there every Thursday.
· Speaking of Cody's, the bar/cyber café/restaurant will host an open mic contest in April and May, with a grand prize of $1,000. Those interested in participating must sign up at Cody's between 8 and 11 p.m. during the venue's usual Sunday night open mic sessions.
· Mood's Main-Flow has released a new 12-inch of the song "Bring It On" (backed with "Show on the Road") on Red Carpet Records. Main-Flow also shows up on the new 10-inch from DJ Greyboy called "Master the Art." On wannabattle.com, you can find info on these releases as well as a preview of Hi-Tek's forthcoming album, Hi-Teknology, which will feature guests Mos Def, Slum Village and Mood's Main Flow and Donte.
· Local band Thistle is finishing its upcoming release, The Oxygen EP. In the meantime, the band has pieced together another great Indie Rock showcase at Top Cat's on Friday. Joining Thistle will be Jack Potential (featuring Mike Harbin of Burning Airlines), up-and-coming Emo/Punk band Kid Brother Collective and locals Sweet Impala. Showtime is 10 p.m.
· The Greater Cincinnati Blues Society is holding a contest to find artwork for the upcoming Queen City Blues Fest poster and T-shirt designs. For guidelines and registration forms, check the Society's site at gcbs.org.
· On Sunday, Lomax, the Cincinnati winners of the Sliver Cup Ohio Jazz Competition, will travel to Columbus to compete in the contest's final round, going up against the best artists from Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton and Toledo. The winners will be awarded $10,000 and a recording contract. Tickets for the play-offs (held at the Columbus Athenaeum) can be bought through ticketmaster.com (or by calling 614-431-3600).
· On Tuesday's Chris and Rob Talk Show, on WAIF (88.3 FM) at 10 p.m., the duo will chat with new Jazz favorite Ken Vandermark. He'll talk about his upcoming tour stop March 30 at the Southgate House with the DKV Trio, amongst other things.
· Former Afghan Whigs frontman Greg Dulli, who is working on a follow-up to his Twilight Singers debut, has embarked on a new, non-musical adventure. Dulli was part of a group of investors who purchased Short Stop, a "dive" bar in Los Angeles. The former police hangout needed saving after business dropped off following the LAPD scandals.
