The Partition of Poland and the Expansion of Russia

Although Catherine the Great and Frederick the Great attempted to enact "enlightened" policies, they also both pursued more traditional aims of rulers. Between 1772 and 1795, Russia, Prussia, and Austria grabbed territory from Poland. These partitions resulted in Poland ceasing to exist as an independent state.
