Confidence gives Jackson a leg up
The Eastern senior is more sure of herself, which has helped her in the long run - and the short run.
The difference is explained easily. In one word, even. It's confidence. Eastern senior Jennifer Jackson is a better runner today than she was a year ago, or even four months ago, because she believes in herself.

Sam Carchidi | Baseball fans, answer me this
The South Jersey high school baseball season starts today. That's not an April Fool's joke. It's just the harsh reality of the schedule.

Serena Smith and Shamara Williams each went 4 for 4 to pace Strawberry Mansion to a 17-4 Public League softball win at Lamberton yesterday.

Pa. Boys | Rodriguez pitches Kensington to win
Kensington pitcher Antonio Rodriguez proved to be a tough customer for William Penn in a Public League baseball game yesterday. Rodriguez went the distance in a five-inning game and came within a walk of a perfect game as the Tigers downed the host Lions, 10-0.

Radnor wins state title, redeems East
The Red Raiders beat Westmont, 2-1, for the Pa. Cup as Malvern Prep and Holy Ghost Prep both fell.
The Radnor ice hockey team kept a secret to itself after losing to Serra Catholic last year in the Pennsylvania Cup Class A state championship game.

New coach, new lineup for Whippets
Russ Wren did not inherit a wealth of experienced players when he took over as coach of the Downingtown High baseball team. "We have a very young group," the first-year head coach said. "We have only two returning varsity players."

What's Up in Pennsylvania
A look ahead at some of the week's must-see events
Today Baseball George Washington at Northeast, 3:15 p.m. The matchup between the host Vikings and the neighboring Eagles is always a good one in the Public League.

A bear on field, an artist on easel
Powerful and muscular at 6 feet and 242 pounds, Josh Bundy cuts quite a figure in portfolio art class at Wissahickon High. "It's interesting to watch the dynamics between him and the rest of the class," said David Miller, who teaches the honors and portfolio arts students at Wissahickon. "He's a big, strong guy, and the rest of the class knows that. It's neat to see a big, strong guy leaning over the easel and doing something very eloquent with self-expression."

Sam Carchidi | By the letters, a season review
Reviewing the 2002-03 scholastic boys' basketball season, ABC style. A is for accuracy. Camden Catholic went 18 for 18 from the free-throw line as it stunned nationally ranked St. Anthony of Jersey City, 52-48, in the Play-by-Play Network Classic before a near-capacity crowd at Cherry Hill East on Feb. 23.

Public League does have plan
Coaches are restless, and understandably so. The Public League becomes PIAA District 12 on July 1, and the coaches know little about the changes the School District of Philadelphia plans to make to help its teams and athletes compete with the rest of the state.

Lebo's game now has mental edge
The Souderton sophomore turned a lack of confidence into a firm belief in herself.
Amanda Lebo might be the soccer player she is today because of what she experienced a few years ago. Despite her considerable talents, Lebo was cut from an under-13 state-select team. For someone who had mostly been patted on the back and praised since she had begun playing club soccer at 8 years old, it turned out to be a turning point.

Rain can't put a damper on Tetkowski's day
It started to rain, and Denise Tetkowski started to laugh. Right before the girls' 100-meter hurdles race was set to start at the Pennsylvania Track Classic yesterday, the overcast skies above the track at Coatesville High opened up and rain started to fall.

Carter added basketball to Paulsboro's lore
Russell Carter was chiefly responsible for changing perceptions at Paulsboro during his four years. He entered a school that was known sports-wise mainly for its successful football and wrestling programs. Carter is departing knowing that the basketball program has become very much a part of the consciousness of the Paulsboro and South Jersey sports fan.

He won't be leaving homework behind
Mike Graham leaves tomorrow for a three-week trip to France to play rugby. But the Central Bucks East senior won't be able to leave his homework behind.

Camden Catholic had the team and the coach

C.H. West swimmer: A real character
In Cherry Hill West's recent production of The Music Man, senior Bill Baskinger played the role of Mayor Shinn. One of Shinn's oft repeated lines in the show was "You watch your phraseology!" The Mayor's character was that of a man who flaunted his importance despite coming off as a goof.

She sprints, jumps and scores
Halimah Bashir, a standout runner, has taken up hurdles to help her Willingboro team.
Halimah Bashir was watching her friends run the hurdles. Just to fool around, she joined them. Doug Keys, Willingboro's head coach during the indoor track and field season and an assistant in the spring, spotted her as she jumped over one with ease during the 2001-02 indoor season.

Spirit rowers coping with construction
Crew's reputation as a spartan sport is well-deserved, but the Holy Spirit girls are currently making sacrifices off the water. While an addition to their boathouse is being built, the girls are storing their boats in a trailer borrowed from the boys' program.

Mount rowers still on the rise
Rowers from Mount St. Joseph traded their shovels for oars and launched upon the snowy Schuylkill. The Philadelphia Scholastic Rowing Association declares President's Day as the first day crews may practice on the water. And it didn't matter to the Magic that the region was socked with about 20 inches of snow in a storm that began on Feb. 16 and didn't end until Feb. 17, President's Day itself.

Coatesville basketball coach quits
Ending a 10-year tenure that produced a PIAA championship, a couple of District 1 titles and a Ches-Mont League crown each year, Jim Smith stepped down yesterday as the boys' basketball coach at Coatesville.
