	Manuel's survival depends on winning.

The White Sox can't figure out why they are playing so badly. They had better find out quickly. "More than anything, this is discouraging,'' said manager Jerry Manuel after Chicago's 5-2 loss to the Indians on June 2. "We're reaching and searching for all the positives we can find. We've got to keep pushing.'' While team management maintains Manuel's job is safe, there has been speculation the sixth-year skipper may be released. "This whole thing is tough to figure out,'' said first baseman Paul Konerko. "If we get down and negative, that is not going to work. We have to stay together.''

NEWS AND NOTES

Sports fans who run on the field or fight in the stands could face fines and jail sentences in a proposal by a Chicago City Council committee. The move comes in response to two highly publicized instances in which fans went on the field during White Sox games. The team is hosting this summer's All-Star game. A City Council panel on May 28 endorsed calls for a $1,000 fine and as much as six months in jail for anyone who steps onto the field, court, rink or pool of any sports facility with more than 3,000 seats. The measure also applies to people who fight in the stands.
