Boss: Sox have it easy
Yankees owner George Steinbrenner is not happy about the upcoming interleague schedule and how the Red Sox will face easier opponents, The New York Times reported June 3. "Katy Feeney makes the schedule, and she has never been a favorite of mine or a favorite of the Yankees," Steinbrenner said to the newspaper. "We play Cincinnati, which is a fine, fine ball club; they're going to be in the middle of it. Then we play the Cubs. Now who is the other guy playing? They're playing against Milwaukee. Now what's right about that? They're playing Pittsburgh and Milwaukee while we're playing Cincinnati and the Cubs. I think they got the best of that deal."

NEWS AND NOTES
  • RHP Derek Lowe has learned that the growth on his nose that developed 10 days ago is not a recurrence of skin cancer, The Boston Herald reported June 3. "It wasn't a pleasant thought knowing you have something that could be cancerous, but it doesn't affect the way you pitch," Lowe told the Herald. "I'd like to tell you that it did."
  • The Red Sox followed through on their preference for college players by taking OF David Murphy of Baylor in the first round of the June 3 amateur draft. Theo Epstein, who became Boston's general manager last November, emphasized that, all things being equal, he would prefer a college player over a less-experienced high schooler. Murphy, a junior who bats and throws left-handed, was taken with the 17th pick. He leads the Big 12 conference with a .420 batting average, is second with 82 runs and fifth with 64 RBI in 65 games. Boston also likes his on-base percentage of .492 and his ability to lay off pitches near but outside of the strike zone.
  • The Red Sox added RHP Byung-Hyun Kim to the roster on June 1 and designated LHP Bruce Chen for assignment. "It feels great to put this uniform on," Kim said through an interpreter. The right-hander had a club-record 36 saves as a closer last season but got his wish to become a starter this year. He was 1-5 with a 3.56 ERA in seven starts. "I'd love to start, but I'm willing to do whatever the team asks me to do," Kim said. Kim makes his first start June 3 in Pittsburgh.

LHP Bruce Chen, designated for assignment on June 1. Chen was 0-1 with a 5.11 ERA in five appearances -- two starts.
