Scouting Report 2002 Season Kip Wells made a successful transition to the National League last year, after being acquired from the Chicago White Sox in a five-player trade at the 2001 winter meetings. He finished with the best ERA of any Pirates' starting pitcher. Still, Wells wound up with a losing record, as Pittsburgh scored three or fewer runs in 16 of his 33 starts. He didn't win after August 24, and went 6-12 in his last 24 starts despite a fine 3.47 ERA. Pitching Wells can be overpowering at times, as his fastball was clocked as high as 99 MPH in his first season with the Pirates. His heater usually resides in the 94-MPH range and has decent movement, though it tends to straighten out when he tries to overthrow. In addition to the fastball, Wells has a sinker that produces groundballs, a curveball with a sharp downward break, an adequate slider and a changeup that he sometimes hesitates to use. He also is durable, as he pitched at least six innings in each of his last 10 starts last season. Defense & Hitting Wells is a shaky fielder who tends to rush throws on close plays. He pays attentions to runners and has a decent move to first base. He handles the bat well and can put a charge into the ball if opposing pitchers aren't careful. Wells also is an outstanding bunter who helps himself by moving runners. 2003 Outlook A former No. 1 pick in Chicago, Wells gained the reputation of being soft and an underachiever with the White Sox. He has shattered those myths since joining the Pirates, and is being counted on to be a cornerstone of the starting rotation for many years to come. He should have won more than 12 games last year and figures to improve on that total in 2003. |
