Scouting Report 2002 Season There were grumblings in Oakland when the team let Jason Isringhausen depart and traded for Billy Koch in December 2001. Koch's durability was suspect, and so was his ability to shut down the opposition. Koch turned out to be invaluable during the Athletics' record-setting 20-game win streak, saving nine contests and winning another three. In August he saved an unbelievable 11 games over 18 innings, with an 0.50 ERA. So much for the doubting Thomases. Pitching Koch brings heat, no doubt about it. More important, he wants to pitch, and is ready to, every day. His fastball clocks at 100 MPH, and he has a good sinker and slider. He also possesses a fine curve that he should use more often. When it is breaking, all of Koch's pitches fall into place and his stuff is truly electric. Koch has worked on coming more overhand with his delivery, which has strengthened his arm and made him a lot more durable. A power pitcher, Koch can be prone to the longball. Defense As a closer, Koch does not pay that much attention to baserunners, and they take advantage. Considering he is a fairly big guy, Koch gets off the hill quickly and has become an adept fielder, handling 26 chances last season without making an error. 2003 Outlook Koch was packaged as part of a six-player trade with the White Sox in early December, a deal that brought closer Keith Foulke to the Bay and also freed up some future cash for the Athletics. The White Sox experienced plenty of closer problems in 2002, and Koch should help resolve that issue in '03. He throws hard and did pitch a lot of innings last year for a closer, but if he stays healthy, Koch should be a solid member of a team that looks to rebound from a very disappointing 2002 campaign. He won't benefit nearly as much from the starters in Chicago as he did from the members of the Oakland rotation, but Koch still is a top-flight stopper who will help the Sox try to regain some championship momentum. |
