Scouting Report 2002 Season The Reds picked up Ryan Dempster last July in a trade with Florida. He had been acquired as a key to what the Reds hoped would be a playoff run, but he instead struggled after arriving with the team. He compiled an ERA of nearly 10.00 over his first seven outings with Cincinnati, and won only twice in his first 10 Reds starts. He finally found himself in September, when he went 3-0. He finished with more than 200 innings pitched for the third straight year. Pitching Dempster has nasty stuff, including a 95-MPH fastball and a hard slider that hits the high 80s. He also has developed a good straight change. However, as his high ERA suggests, he labors with command and constantly has struggled with mechanics. After coming to the Reds, pitching coach Don Gullett worked with Dempster on shortening his stride home and finding a consistent release point. It took some time for the adjustments to take hold, but when they did, Dempster had consistency with his heavy sinker and cut down on his walks. He also began regaining the aggressiveness that had been lost during the course of the past year and a half. Defense & Hitting His constant tinkering with his delivery has made Dempster inconsistent in his ability to hold runners. He fields his position adequately. After making seven errors between 2000 and 2001, he did not commit any miscues last season. He occasionally can help himself with the bat, and is an especially competent bunter. 2003 Outlook The early returns on Dempster were not good for the Reds. However, this still could be a pickup that pays major dividends. He has long been considered an ace in waiting who needed to develop better command and mechanics. Those are things Gullett is good at teaching, and Dempster might have a nice career ahead of him. He has the stuff to be No. 1 or 2 starter and a consistent 16-18 game winner. |
