Scouting Report 2002 Season Much was expected from Chris Carpenter in his fifth full season with the Jays, but he wasn't right from the beginning and ultimately succumbed to shoulder surgery after 13 starts. Normally a workhorse, he gave up 89 hits, 11 homers and 27 walks in only 73.1 innings. Pitching & Defense Carpenter mixes a 92-93 MPH fastball with a sweeping curve, a cutter and changeup. When the curve is on, he freezes batters; when it's not, he banks on a fastball that can lack movement and command. Delivering from the three-quarters position, he fought a tendency to drop down in the midst of a game. When healthy, Carpenter has a good move to first and gives his catchers a good shot at basestealers with a quick delivery. He is athletic off the mound, and hasn't erred in the past two seasons. 2003 Outlook Carpenter likely won't be ready to pitch until late in the year, if then. While the Jays tried to keep their rehabbing free agent in the fold, Carpenter reached an agreement with St. Louis on a one-year, $1 million deal that includes a 2004 club option. |
