Scouting Report 2002 Season It's a thankless job, but Ramiro Mendoza does it well. He did it again last year, taking over for starters who were knocked out early or couldn't carry a lead all the way to the setup corps. Though his role lacks prestige, Mendoza made a solid contribution by preventing games from getting out of hand and by allowing the rest of the relief corps to stick to their given roles. Pitching & Defense A pure sinkerballer, Mendoza simply comes in, throws strikes and gets grounders, regardless of the batter or situation. He also throws a four-seamer and a change, mostly for show. He came through the minors as a starter and is capable of working several innings at a time. Years of flagging down the comebackers he induces has trained him well, and he's gotten better at holding runners. 2003 Outlook Mendoza became a free agent after the season, and while the Yankees would like to bring him back, he may move on in hopes of getting a chance to start. He could be a decent third or fourth starter for a team with a good defensive infield. |
