Scouting Report

2002 Season
Whether in New York with the Mets or in Cincinnati with the Reds, Shawn Estes couldn't win last year. He earned only five victories in his 29 total starts, with only one coming after he joined the Reds. While with New York, he had a stretch of six straight starts (and 11 of 12) in which his team didn't win. It says something about his season that Estes' most memorable moment was throwing a pitch behind Roger Clemens in a Mets-Yankees interleague game when his teammates all wanted him to hit The Rocket.

Pitching
Estes' stuff has teased people for years. But his velocity has leveled out in the high 80s, and his command, always suspect, just hasn't improved. He has an assortment of weapons, including a good cutter, a changeup that he turns over and sinks and a 12-to-6 curve that can be devastating when it's under control. However, no one ever knows what Estes will bring to the mound on a given day. He also seems fragile mentally and is prone to allowing a big inning. He can be overpowering for four or five frames but then suddenly unravel when facing his first trouble in a game.

Defense & Hitting
Estes' delivery sometimes leaves him out of position. He tends to make erratic plays when he rushes. He holds runners fairly well and his pickoff move can be effective. Once a decent hitter, he's become a virtual automatic out at the plate, though one of his three hits last year was a home run that came against the Yankees amid the interleague circus surrounding Clemens' appearance versus the Mets.

2003 Outlook
The Reds appear to have little interest in keeping Estes, a free agent. And he faced a long winter looking for a job. Eventually, some team will take a chance on a lefthander who is only 30 years old and can show effective stuff. However, Estes needs a good season to revive what is fast becoming a washed-out career.
