Scouting Report 2002 Season A native of downstate Illinois, Jason Isringhausen had a homecoming of sorts when he signed with the Cardinals as a free agent last December. He then converted 32 of 37 save opportunities in what was a mixed first season with St. Louis. He tied a record with 12 saves in May and didn't allow a home run all year. He also posted an excellent strikeout-walk ratio. However, recurring arm problems caused him to be shut down for extensive periods twice during the season's second half. Pitching Isringhausen is tough to beat when he has command of his fastball. He brings it in the 94-97 MPH range, mixing in a late-moving cutter and occasional curve. He is deadly on righthanded batters with his hard stuff. He gets in trouble when he loses the strike zone and occasionally will unravel in such situations, unable to make adjustments. Isringhausen also irritated management by not being forthcoming about his arm troubles, a communications problem that often made his availability uncertain during the last several weeks of 2002. Defense & Hitting Isringhausen is a big power pitcher who doesn't worry about getting into fielding position. As a result, he is very awkward when required to make a play, and he committed two errors in only 11 chances last year. He also is very easy to run on for opposing basestealers. Over the past four seasons, they are 36-for-39 when stealing with Isringhausen on the mound. He hasn't had an at-bat since 1999, but exhibited a fairly effective swing when he was with the Mets. 2003 Outlook The Cardinals ended last year concerned about Isringhausen's durability. They stressed to him the need for better offseason conditioning. Surgery in October may leave him a little behind this spring, but it isn't expected to sideline him for long. Tied up for at least three more years on a multiyear contract, he is firmly entrenched as the St. Louis closer. And with better physical preparation and maturity, he could move into the 40-save echelon. |
