Scouting Report 2002 Season It was a very frustrating season for Woody Williams, who spent nearly half the year on the disabled list due to strained left oblique and strained left ribcage injuries. He was outstanding when he was able to take the ball, allowing more than three runs in only one of 17 starts. The Cardinals went 12-5 in those games, and are 20-8 in Williams' starts since he joined the Redbirds in August of 2001. His ERA has been a sparkling 2.42 as a member of the Cardinals. Pitching Over the last two years, Williams has increased the velocity of his good cut fastball into the 90-92 MPH range. Combined with what has become an outstanding changeup, he's as tough as anyone on lefthanded batters. In fact, he's surrendered a lower batting average to lefties than righties in each of the past four seasons. Williams mixes in an occasionally effective curveball and throws all his offerings with solid command. He also is the kind of competitor who rarely falls victim to a big inning. He pitches his way out of jams and usually keeps his pitch counts very manageable. Defense & Hitting Because he gathers himself in his delivery, Williams is fairly easy for basestealers to time. However, he does a solid job of trying to hold runners with frequent throws to first. He's a good fielder otherwise and also helps himself with the bat. He's hit over .200 in his major league career and shown occasional power. 2003 Outlook When Williams has been able to pitch, no Cardinals pitcher has produced more consistent starts. He also is a gamer who has become an important part of the great St. Louis clubhouse mix. At 36 years old, Williams is a classic example of a pitcher blooming late in his career, and the Cardinals recognized his substantial upside by re-signing him to a two-year, $14.9 million contract extension in late November. The deal also includes an $8 million team option for 2005. Williams should be a solid 15-game winner if he can avoid physical troubles. |
