NEWS AND NOTES
  • The Padres finalized their roster on March 30 when they optioned C Michael Rivera to Triple-A Portland and reassigned INF Alex Pelaez to minor league camp. Rivera had been competing with Wiki Gonzalez to back up Gary Bennett.
  • OFs Brady Anderson and Roberto Kelly failed to make the Padres as non-roster invitees. Kelly, 38, asked for and was granted his release as the club broke camp March 27. Anderson, 39, accepted assignment to Triple-A Portland.
  • OF Shane Victorino must remain on the big-league roster all season or be offered back to the Dodgers.
  • The Padres purchased INF Keith Lockhart's contract on March 27 and reassigned INF Oscar Robles to Mexico City of the Mexican summer league.
  • RH rookie Clay Condrey was selected to be the No. 5 starter, relegating rookie LHP Mike Bynum to the bullpen. "We hope Clay makes 30, 35 starts for us this year," said Bochy. "He's got four pitches, he's got command and he competes very well."

    ESPN MAG Q&A;: PADRES
Q: With Phil Nevin out, do the Padres have the NL's worst lineup? How badly will they sicken their fans? -Mike, Japan

A: Stay close to the bathroom, Mike, it's gonna be a long season. Ryan Klesko is the only true run-producer, and he'll overswing to make up for Nevin's absence. Feeling queasy yet?

    SCOUTING REPORT (FROM STATS INC.)
    Phil Nevin, 2003 Outlook
Although he would prefer to play third base, Nevin knows that the Padres are a better team with Sean Burroughs' glove there, and he has volunteered to play left field. Nevin played there with some success in 1996 and 1997 when he was with the Tigers, so the move won't be too much of an adjustment. ...
