Contreras replaces Weaver
Jose Contreras
Contreras
The Yankees' visit to Comerica Park shook up their rotation. Longtime starter David Wells pitched 5 2/3 innings of relief to earn the victory in New York's 10-9 win against Detroit in 17 innings on June 1. Then after the game, manager Joe Torre said Jose Contreras would take Jeff Weaver's spot in the rotation either June 5 at Cincinnati or June 6 at Wrigley Field against the Cubs. The decision was based on Weaver's struggles and Contreras' two-hit, seven-inning performance in his first major league start May 30 in a win over the Tigers. "He deserves to start,'' Torre said. "(Weaver) was a little down. That's understandable. He's just going to have to work his way back."

Boss: Sox have easier schedule
The Boss is upset -- again. Owner George Steinbrenner is not happy about the upcoming interleague schedule and how the Red Sox will face easier opponents, The New York Times reported June 3. "Katy Feeney makes the schedule, and she has never been a favorite of mine or a favorite of the Yankees," Steinbrenner said to the newspaper. "We play Cincinnati, which is a fine, fine ball club; they're going to be in the middle of it. Then we play the Cubs. Now who is the other guy playing? They're playing against Milwaukee. Now what's right about that? They're playing Pittsburgh and Milwaukee while we're playing Cincinnati and the Cubs. I think they got the best of that deal."

NEWS AND NOTES
  • Derek Jeter will be named team captain at a news conference before the June 3 game against the Reds, The New York Times reports. The 28-year old shortstop will become the team's 11th captain in franchise history and the first since Don Mattingly.
  • Dwight Gooden, currently a special adviser for the Yankees, will be the pitching coach for the team's rookie league club in the Gulf Coast League this summer. "It's something I want to experience and try," said Gooden, who went 194-112 with a 3.51 ERA before retiring at the end of spring training two years ago. "I owe it to myself and the organization."
