Kieschnick makes the switch
Brooks Kieschnick successfully made the transition from a major league position player to pitcher April 30 when the Brewers purchased his contract from Triple-A Indianapolis. He is the first major league player to make the switch since Ron Mahay, an outfielder with Boston in 1995 before pitching for four major league teams from 1997 to 2002. Kieschnick will be a right-handed relief pitcher for the Brewers and a left-handed pinch hitter. "It's a great story," first baseman Richie Sexson said. A roster spot opened when right-hander Todd Ritchie was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a tired right shoulder, a move retroactive to April 25.

De Los Santos
The Brewers put reliever Valerio De Los Santos on the 15-day disabled list with tendinitis in his left shoulder April 29. De Los Santos was the team's top left-handed setup man out of the bullpen. "There's no structural damage," said manager Ned Yost. "The thing about it is he's such a competitor he would probably get to where he would sit two or three days and then try to pitch through it." To replace De Los Santos on the roster, the team recalled left-hander Leo Estrella from Triple-A Indianapolis.

NEWS AND NOTES
  • 2B Eric Young was not in the starting lineup April 29 against the Expos because of a strained right hip flexor. He is day-to-day.
  • RH reliever Jayson Durocher, on the disabled list after undergoing surgery to remove bone spurs in his right elbow, threw 46 pitches in the bullpen April 29. Durocher will probably throw batting practice May 2 and soon head to a minor league rehabilitation assignment that could last 7-to-10 days.
  • The Brewers released RHP Jamey Wright from his Triple-A contract on April 28.
  • Setup man Luis Vizcaino lowered his team-worst ERA to 13.03 with a scoreless inning against the Braves on April 27. "His slider is flat," a National League scout told the Journal Sentinel on April 27. "It doesn't have the bite that it did last year. You still see it from time to time out there, but he's throwing one good one and then two or three really bad ones."
  • The Brewers will honor Bob Uecker on July 24, his final home game before receiving the Ford C. Frick Award and induction into the broadcaster's wing of the National Baseball Hall of Fame on July 27, the Journal Sentinel reported.
  • LHP Glendon Rusch, the loser in the April 27 game, has never beaten the Braves in eight appearances (0-4).

    SCOUTING REPORT (FROM STATS INC.)
    Royce Clayton, 2002 Season
The White Sox acquired him because of his fielding skills, but Royce Clayton's popularity with fans seemed to depend on his hitting. He got off to poor starts the last two seasons, but both times rallied to get his final average near his career mark. In 2002 he lost his job when third baseman Joe ...
