NEWS AND NOTES
  • With an ownership change from News Corp. to Tampa Bay Buccaneer owner Malcolm Glazer seemingly close, the commissioner's office has not received a final proposal for approval, baseball executives told the Los Angeles Times in the June 3 edition. If a deal is completed soon, some believe Commissioner Bud Selig would schedule an Aug. 15 meeting for owners to vote on the transaction.
  • An MRI exam of OF Daryle Ward's sore right hand did not reveal ligament damage, the Los Angeles Times reported. Ward is suffering from inflammation of his joints caused by swinging a bat too much. When he does return, he's ready for quick start. "You hear all the time about guys coming off the disabled list and get going real fast," Ward told the paper. "I've got to get myself healthy first, but it could happen."
  • RHP Kevin Brown, who was 5-0 with a 1.02 ERA, was named NL Pitcher of the Month for May. Leading all NL starters in wins and ERA, Brown allowed only five earned runs and 28 hits with 36 strikeouts in 44 innings last month. The 38-year-old Brown leads the league with a 2.02 ERA and is tied for the most wins with seven after spending much of last season on the disabled list. He allowed one earned run or fewer in nine of his 12 starts, including all six in May.
