Sweeney's L.A. story
 mike sweeney
Captain Mike: Sweeney is the man for the Royals.
Visiting Dodger Stadium (June 3-5) will be something of a sentimental journey for first baseman Mike Sweeney, who grew up in the Los Angeles area, the Kansas City Star reported. In 1985, he and Geoff Blum, now with the Astros, shared the field one day with the likes of Orel Hershiser, Fernando Valenzuela and Pedro Guerrero. "He and I were one of six or seven state finalists for the Pitch, Hit and Run competition. And we got to go to Dodger Stadium for the finals," Sweeney told the newspaper. "Geoff and I didn't win, but we were happy to be on the field. It was fun."

Mr. Intensity
Brent Abernathy will help fill in for injured second baseman Carlos Febles, the Kansas City Star reported. Although manager Tony Pena plans to use Desi Relaford as his primary second baseman, Relaford often plays other positions so Abernathy -- known as a hard-driving player -- will get some chances. "The extra drive and … and fire might have started early on because I had to do that. I'm not a guy that blessed with a whole lot of tools," Abernathy told the newspaper. "I'm a guy that's got to go out and work my tail off and do the little things it takes to win ballgames."
