Higginson finds 'center'
 bobby higginson
Where Higginson stops, nobody knows.
Bobby Higginson's tour of the Tigers' lineup took him to a new position April 16 against the Twins, the Detroit News reported. For the first time since 1996, he started in center field. Higginson isn't exactly a prototypical leadoff center fielder, but that's his role for now. "I never thought I'd be a leadoff center fielder, but if it's going to help the team, it's a no-brainer," said Higginson, who was moved from left to right field this year and has hit first, third and fourth. Last year, he started in left for all but one of his starts and hit third for all but eight.

NEWS AND NOTES
  • OF Dmitri Young was scratched from the April 17 game against Minnesota with a a sore groin. He is day-to-day.
  • Former major league pitcher Jose Lima signed with the Newark Bears of the independent Atlantic League on April 17. Lima was 63-74 with a 5.14 ERA in nine big league seasons with the Astros and Tigers.
  • Despite being Alan Trammell's right hand man, bench coach Kirk Gibson was standing on the opposite end of the dugout during some home games. "He just decided it might bring a little change of luck if he evaluated the situation from the other end of the dugout," Trammell told The Detroit News. "But he's walking back and forth, talking to the players. They're starting to see the passion he has. It's not phony, this is the way he is. It's one of the reasons I brought him back."
