NEWS AND NOTES
  • Ian Stewart, a power-hitting third baseman from La Quinta High School in Garden Grove, Calif., was the Rockies' first-round choice June 3 in baseball's amateur draft. Stewart, the 10th pick in the first round, is a left-handed hitter who has been compared to Oakland's Eric Chavez. Scouts say he has the potential for legitimate big-league power. Stewart, who was offered a full ride to the University of Southern California, was only the second non-pitcher selected in the first round by the Rockies. First baseman Todd Helton was the other, in 1995.
  • Juan Uribe will be called up from his minor league rehab assignment to replace the injured 2B Ronnie Belliard, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list. Belliard sprained his right ankle during the June 1 game in San Francisco when he was caught between sliding or going into second base standing up.
  • LHP Denny Neagle threw a six-inning simulated game June 1 and reported no pain in his left elbow. Neagle expects to resume his rehab assignment after throwing a bullpen session June 3 at Coors Field. Neagle said he would like to be granted a new 30-day rehab assignment because the nature of the injury is different from the left elbow tightness that initially sidelined him. "I might be ready in two starts, but you want to have the option in case you need more time," Neagle told the Rocky Mountain News on June 2. "I don't want to rush because of a time limit."
  • RHP Denny Stark, out with a torn lat muscle, threw June 1 for Single-A Visalia and is expected to make at least three more minor-league starts, the Post reported.
