Ellis in the outfield
 ellis burks
Burks is the elder statesman of the Tribe.
Manager Eric Wedge plans on playing Ellis Burks as much as possible in left field during interleague play, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported. It's either that or Burks sits because the designated hitter does not exist in National League parks. "I'm looking forward to playing," said Burks, who has done nothing but DH this season. "It's no big thing." Burks, a Gold Glove outfielder with Boston in 1990, made six starts in left field last year during the Tribe's three-city NL tour of Denver, Miami and Montreal. "If Ellis isn't starting, we'll try to find ways to use him in other ways," said Wedge.

The Chicago Kid
Rookie Jody Gerut -- whose pinch-hit, broken-bat single beat the White Sox, 5-4, in the 10th inning June 1 -- grew up on the west side of Chicago, where baseball loyalty is geographical, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported. The north side belongs to the Cubs, the south side to the White Sox, but the west side is split. "In my neighborhood we were White Sox fans," Gerut told the newspaper "I'm sure half of my friends are going to be swearing at me and the other half will be saying, 'Yes!' In Chicago, it's life or death with the White Sox or Cubs. You've got to be a White Sox or a Cub fan. You can't be both."

Bere faces more surgery
jason bere
Bere
Jason Bere most likely is out for the season and may need more surgery after an MRI revealed further damage in his shoulder. The right-hander was examined May 29 by team Dr. Mark Schickendantz, and tests found more fraying in Bere's rotator cuff. Bere was transferred from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL on May 30. The club said the 32-year-old pitcher, signed as a free agent in December, would get a second medical opinion. "It doesn't look good," said manager Eric Wedge. "There's a good chance he needs more surgery."

NEWS AND NOTES
  • LHP Brian Anderson allowed two runs on five hits over six innings June 2 against the White Sox and won for the first time since April 9. "It's been awhile, so it feels good to get that off my back,'' said Anderson, whose last outing was two innings of hitless relief in a 5-2 win in Detroit on May 27. In his previous start, a 12-3 loss at Boston on May 24, Anderson allowed eight hits and eight runs -- just three earned -- in five innings.
  • 2B Ricky Gutierrez took infield and batting practice for the second straight day before the June 2 game against Chicago, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported. Gutierrez, recovering from spinal fusion surgery on his neck, then was scheduled to go to Triple-A Buffalo to start a third rehab assignment.
  • RF Karim Garcia is swinging a bat again after wearing a splint on his left wrist for a week, the Plain Dealer reported. If all goes well, he'll return to Buffalo next week to restart his rehab.
  • Entering play June 3, CF Milton Bradley has reached base safely in 40 of 41 games, and has eight hits in his last 15 at-bats, with six RBIs. "I'm just feeling comfortable, relaxing, and enjoying the game of baseball," he said.
