Haynes 'back' on DL

Haynes
Right-hander Jimmy Haynes went on the 15-day disabled list with a bulging disk and stiffness in his back after giving up 10 runs in the worst outing of his career April 17 against the Cubs. Haynes flew back to Cincinnati for treatment while the rest of the team went to Puerto Rico for a three-game series against Montreal. "It's probably a good decision," Haynes said after the Reds' 16-3 loss to Chicago. "It's tough enough to pitch with an injury or something bothering you, especially a back. I want to get this thing taken care of."

Not in Graves condition
 Danny Graves
Graves
When Boston's Derek Lowe converted to starter from closer last season, he gave up a total of 15 hits over his first five starts. Danny Graves equaled that in his first two starts then added 11 more on April 15. Needless to say this isn't the ideal way to start the season, but Graves isn't abandoning hope just yet. "I still think this can work," Graves told the Cincinnati Enquirer. "Obviously, the first three starts are not up to par. Right now, nothing's working, and I'm not catching any breaks."

Here's the catch ...
 Jason LaRue
LaRue continues to improve.
In his third full season in the majors, catcher Jason LaRue has blossomed into a complete player. "I am totally, 100-percent comfortable catching and hitting this year," LaRue told the Cincinnati Post. "It's all part of the learning experience that you've got to go through. Bob (Boone) and I have spent a lot of one-on-one time over the years, sitting down and talking about catching and relaxing behind the plate. There are situations where in the past, I have gotten too caught up in what was going on and gotten a little tense. I can't let that happen again. I have to stay relaxed, no matter what the situation is."

NEWS AND NOTES
  • Mike Schmidt is fighting to help Pete Rose become eligible for the Hall of Fame, The New York Times reported April 18. "I am optimistic that Pete Rose will be reinstated this year and will be on the Hall of Fame ballot next year," said Schmidt. "Pete has paid his dues."
  • Manager Bob Boone met with Brandon Larson on April 14 to help the third baseman break out out of his hitting slump, the Cincinnati Inquirer reported. Boone sees Larson's problem as hitting position. "Everybody who's played gets out of synch," Boone told the newspaper. "The veteran guys, who have been through it, know how to get it back. … You have to get strong hitting position to maximize your chances."
  • Sean Casey will miss the April 17 game against the Cubs, the Cincinnati Inquirer reported. Casey's wife, Mandi, is set to deliver their second child that day. She'll have labor induced.
  • LHP Felix Heredia's performance April 13 -- three innings of one-hit, shutout ball in a 13-1 blowout loss to Philadelphia -- was not only his best of the year, it saved the rest of the bullpen, the Inquirer reported. The Reds don't have a long man in the bullpen in the Jim Brower/Ron Villone mode. "That's nice to have," manager Bob Boone told the newspaper. "You put them in there and have them go five, six innings. Maybe Heredia's that guy."
  • RHP Joey Hamilton agreed to a minor league deal with the Reds on April 11. Hamilton went 4-10 with a 5.27 ERA in 17 starts and 22 relief appearances for Cincinnati last year. He rejected an offer of salary arbitration after the season, leaving him a free agent. Hamilton isn't eligible to pitch for the Reds until May 1.

  • SCOUTING REPORT (FROM STATS INC.)
    Adam Dunn, Baserunning & Defense
There are few more imposing baserunners than the hard-charging Dunn. He is a legitimate stolen-base threat and is very aggressive about taking extra bases. He still can be crude in the outfield, where he made nine total errors last year, high for an outfielder with his average range. His arm is of ...
