Pedro upset with reporters
 Pedro Martinez
Where's the fun-loving Pedro been this season?
Pedro Martinez isn't talking to reporters, but the Boston pitcher spoke up in the Red Sox clubhouse on April 24. Martinez, apparently upset with something written about him, had a loud outburst aimed at some Boston-area writers in the clubhouse before the Red Sox played Texas. Nomar Garciaparra stepped in and asked the reporters to get away from Martinez. The three-time Cy Young Award winner began his self-imposed silence before his April 17 start against Tampa Bay, when he allowed just two singles in seven shutout innings. That came five days after giving up a career-worst 10 runs in 4 1/3 innings against Baltimore. Other than that horrendous outing against the Orioles, Martinez has allowed just three runs – one earned – over 29 innings his other four starts. He is 2-1 with a 2.97 ERA.

Pedro, Sox playing 'childish game'?
In the April 23 edition of the Boston Herald, Tony Massarotti writes: "Martinez appears to have some sort of strain and the problem does not seem terribly serious, but Pedro isn't talking and the Sox are stuck in the middle of what is rapidly becoming a childish game. In the continued absence of comments from Martinez, let it heretofore be noted that the pitcher has forfeited all right to defend himself."

NEWS AND NOTES
  • The Red Sox acquired RH reliever Michael Nicolas from Milwaukee on April 24 for a player to be named later or cash. Nicholas was optioned by the Red Sox to Double-A Portland. The Brewers had claimed Nicholas on April 23 after he was put on waivers by San Diego. In five appearances for Mobile, the Padres' Double-A team, Nicolas was 0-1 with an 8.10 ERA with a save.
  • RHP Robert Person pitched 1 2/3 shutout innings April 22 in his second rehab start for Class A Sarasota. Person, who had elbow and shoulder surgery in August of 2002, threw 13 of his 21 pitches for strikes, allowing two hits and striking out one. "No problems tonight," Person said. "I just had to adjust from the bullpen mound to the mound on the field."
  • Pitching coach Tony Cloninger, diagnosed with bladder cancer in spring training, sat in the dugout April 22 for the first time this season, The Hartford Courant reported.
  • LH reliever Alan Embree (shoulder tendinitis) could be activated from the DL after the team's six-game road trip, The Hartford Courant reported April 23.

    SCOUTING REPORT (FROM STATS INC.)
    Trot Nixon, Hitting
Nixon is a strong, patient hitter who has a good mix of power and on-base skills. He often batted second or third in 2001, but was dropped to the lower third of the order last year after the return of Nomar Garciaparra and the addition of Johnny Damon. He likes to look over the first pitch and isn't ...
