 vladimir guerrero
Shining superstar: Vlad is good.
The Expos still believe they have a chance to keep rightfielder Vladimir Guerrero, a potential free agent this winter, the Seattle Times reported. "In my opinion, this guy is going to be the first free agent we've seen who honestly doesn't sign somewhere because of the money," Frank Robinson told the newspaper. "He's just a very unique individual, and it's really nice to see. He's an old-school player -- he could have fit in with us as players very easily -- except he has choices old-school players never got to make."

NEWS AND NOTES
  • Playing passionately is the rule in Puerto Rico, where baseball has long been the top sport. But with the island hosting the first of three regular-season homestands for the Expos starting April 11, there is new excitement in the neighborhood parks that have produced many top players. "It makes us part of baseball," said Ricky Marin, a 16-year-old outfielder. "It makes us want to play better."
  • According to Forbes magazine, the Expos are the least valuable team in baseball at $113 million. The Expos, who were bought by the other 29 teams for $120 million before the 2002 season, lost $9.1 million last year. Find more at www.forbes.com.
  • RHP Orlando Hernandez, on the DL with shoulder tendinitis, had a soft-toss session April 8 in Chicago, The Montreal Gazette reported. Hernandez's throwing program continues with shoulder-strengthening exercise and soft-toss for the rest of the week. The next step would be 30-pitch sessions off a mound if all goes well.
  • Some fans at Wrigley Field booed when the Canadian national anthem was played before the Cubs' home opener against the Expos on April 8. The smattering of boos was noticeable among the crowd of 29,138, a backlash from last month when "The Star-Spangled Banner" was booed before an Islanders-Canadiens hockey game in Montreal -- a response to the war in Iraq. "Two stupid reactions don't make it right, I think," said manager Frank Robinson.

    SCOUTING REPORT (FROM STATS INC.)
    Scott Stewart, 2002 Season
Scott Stewart figured to get a few saves as part of a closer-by-committee arrangement last season, but his primary role was to be setup duty. After Scott Strickland was traded and several Expos righthanders were unable to close out games, Stewart was awarded the closer's role all to himself. He ...
