Xcrawl GM's Screen

New Page 1 Xcrawl GM's Screen
From: Pandahead Productions

Xcrawl GM's Screen is a new Xcrawl supplement from Pandahead Productions. Some things just go together: dungeons and dragons, chocolate and peanut butter, Sonny and Cher... and GM's screens and mini-modules. Pandahead Productions brings us a screen for their D&D; variant, Xcrawl.

First, the screen. They've gone the 'one side art/one side data' route, rather than printing any info on the players' side. Which is fine; I've never been in that many situations where my players would even be able to read anything printed on the outside of my screen anyway. The art by Chris Appel is spiffy - you really do need to stretch the screen out to full size to really appreciate it - but the data side leaves a lot to be desired. If you pick up the Xcrawl screen, you'll likely end up putting it up for the art, but with the D&D; screen behind it for data.

The mini-module isn't bad, really, as mini-modules go. There's a darkly humorous plotline involving a scorned girlfriend with a singular dedication for revenge, culminating in the Inaugural Celebrity Pro/Am Crawl. You won't want to run this as the first Crawl for your players; there is some rule bending (and breaking) going on, and they won't recognize it for what it is unless they've been on a few 'straight' Crawls first. Pro/Am does manage to work in a few new creatures; the werecockroach is the best of the bunch, being suitably dangerous for low-level characters and fitting in well with the modern environs of the Xcrawl setting. There's a bit of errata included at the end of the module: descriptions of the deities from the Xcrawl setting. I'd hope that this information is included on the Pandahead website so that GM's don't feel forced into buying the Screen just for that.

If you're a big fan of Xcrawl, there are worse things you could spend your money on than the GM's Screen, but if you're just a casual player its not exactly a must-have.
