New Masquerade Miniatures

New miniatures
From: Masquerade Miniatures

New fantasy and sci-fi miniatures from Masquerade Miniatures.

From German sculptor Stefan Niehues (Assassin and Reaper vet), Masquerade offers seven new unpainted minis. What Masquerade lacks in quantity, it makes up for in quality. Each is fairly well detailed and costs about the same as a single Games Workshop character (prices run from $4.99 to 9.99). While most have round bases, a few have irregular, molded bases that are a nuisance to remove for gaming purposes.

The highlight is the topless Amazon (and, no, not because she has a nice rack). Most sculptors have trouble with female faces, especially the proportions of the ears, lips and nose. Niehues, however, hits the mark. To his credit, he avoids turning her into a silicone (don’t look for porn in miniatures; you want porn? surf the net). The heavily armed Deadlock looks suspiciously like Marvel Comics’ Deadpool. It has a dramatic pose (firing two huge pistols while leaping backwards) and a superhero-style masked face. The sculpts of the guns are the weakest part of the model: The bullets are excellent, but the pistols themselves are plain and boring.

The Wizard, Female Assassin and Cyborg Demon are ho-hum, but Masquerade’s Treeman, a version of Tolkien’s Ents, is a nice alternate conceptualization (even if it lacks the leafy branches one normally expects). Rounding out the bunch, the Cyclop Guardian is something of a cross between Warhammer and Mad Max. It holds a huge…wrench…because somewhere, a large bolt is loose.
