Cover Art Very Secretary
Standing in the Shade
[Mud/Parasol]
Rating: 7.0

Do you like violins? I think they're pretty cool. Especially if, like, they're not playing Beethoven or something like that. Very Secretary is from Champaign, Illinois. That Roy guy that used to be in Braid is their drummer, but the others are all from like England, or Danville or something.

Have you ever heard Shellyan Orphan? They were, like, from England too or something which means that they don't use lots of amps. These guys are quiet. They don't yell or scream a lot, which makes them mature or something. But it's good, because they don't sound like a bunch of idiots, either. Allan and Dave Quiet are brothers that play the acoustic and electric guitars and basses. They used to be in a band with this guy named Gorbachev that had two bass players. Then they realized that you could play two notes on the bass at once. And then they realized that having two basses in a band is stupid.

"This Lovesick" is the second song and is my "fave." It's got the best mix of the violin, the little quiet guy singing about flowers and art or something, and chiming guitars. "Sharp Dressers" is about Led Zeppelin going to college in the Netherlands with a bunch of girls or something, and elves.

I think these guys are better than Belle and Sebastian, because they don't have to talk about how they're big wimps. Instead they say, "Countries, and paper, and Giannini is cool" or something. I think they like sweaters and Sunday school and whispering. Have you ever heard the Lilac Time? Sometimes I wish the violin would cut it out, because it's kind of loud in the mix and it's in just about every song. Also, the guitars are doing enough stuff to make it "all-some," anyway.

If I knew more about music, I'd say these guys are like The Sea and Cake from down on the farm, but I don't know what the hell I'm talking about. So anyway, Very Secretary's got a good beat and you can sleep to it.
