Pitching, Defense & Hitting
Almanza's lively fastball can top out at 95 MPH. At his best, he complements it with a slow, biting curveball at 72-73 MPH. Perhaps because of the bone chips, he lost his feel for the curve in early August, allowing hitters to sit on his fastball with great success. Almanza has a solid changeup, which he uses to keep righthanders in check. The first batters he faced were able to reach base 42 percent of the time, a problem for someone often called on to face just one hitter. Almanza is a decent fielder who has improved against the running game. He had no plate appearances in 2001.
