The Giants signed free agent Jose Cruz Jr. on Jan. 28. Cruz, who hit .245 with 18 homers and 70 RBI for the Blue Jays last season, signed a one-year deal that includes a salary of $2.5 million in 2003 and a mutual option for a second season. If Cruz stays with the Giants in 2004, he'll make $4 million. If not, he'll get a $300,000 buyout. "It's a good place to play," said his agent, Alan Hendricks. "They need what he does." Cruz will fill the vacancy created in right field when the team declined arbitration for Reggie Sanders.

They have a new second baseman, a new third baseman, a new center fielder, a new right fielder, and two-fifths of a new starting rotation. But they also have something else pennant winners usually don't have -- a sour taste that suggests that they know 2002 was their best chance to win it all, and now begins a slow descent to what they hope is a soft landing.

	The Giants, who were eight outs away from winning last year's World Series in six games, have changed half their everyday lineup, traded their winningest starting pitcher and have essentially traded manager Dusty Baker for a Giant, Felipe Alou, so Dusty could move on to the Cubs.

The home stadium of the Giants will keep the name Pacific Bell Park this season, even though Pacific Bell is now SBC Communications Inc.

The Giants signed 1B Andres Galarraga to a minor-league contract Jan. 29 and invited him to spring training.

LHP Damian Moss and the Giants avoided salary arbitration on Jan. 16 by agreeing to a one-year, $1.55 million contract.
