Scouting Report

Pitching
Dessens pitched more than 200 innings for the first time in his professional career. His success in 2001 can be attributed to his learning to more consistently change speeds, as well as his development of a good cutter and a two-seam sinking fastball, which led to an increase in groundballs. His four-seamer can reach the low 90s, but he gets into trouble when he reverts back to his earlier pattern of trying to power his way through hitters. When he's up in the strike zone, Dessens is vulnerable to the longball. He lacks the one consistent pitch that can get him out of trouble if he's pitching from behind in the count.

Defense & Hitting
Baserunners can have a tough time trying to steal on Dessens, though he lacks a quality pickoff move and at times gets distracted with men on base. Opposing thieves were successful on just 13 of 28 attempts in 2001. He is an adequate fielder of his position and gets off the mound fairly well to handle bunts. At the plate, Dessens is not an automatic out. He led all Reds pitchers with 11 hits last year and is capable of making fairly consistent contact.
