Scouting Report

Pitching
With a mid-to upper-90s fastball, Wood throws just as hard as he did before surgery. His curve is hard to lay off, though he occasionally lacks command of it. When he's getting the pitch over, he'll rarely need to go to his slider. His third pitch is a cutter that he busts in on the hands of lefthanded hitters. In 2000, the Cubs had him lay off the curve and work on using a fosh as his second pitch, but he hasn't developed much confidence in it.

Defense & Hitting
Wood uses his legs to help generate velocity, so rather than abbreviate his stretch delivery, he has developed an excellent pickoff move. Baserunners still run on him, and many of them make it, but he picked off seven of them last year the most of any righthanded pitcher in baseball. He's also a smooth fielder, making just one error in 33 chances in 2001. He's one of the better-hitting pitchers in the game, with respectable power and excellent bunting skills.
