Scouting Report Pitching By now hitters know that Foulke is going to throw two changeups for every one fastball, but they still can't hit them. He never tips off his changeup with his delivery and constantly gets hitters to swing under it, hitting popups and flyballs. Foulke's fastball rarely exceeds 90 MPH, but it's good enough to jam hitters looking for the changeup. Hitters often attack his first pitch, knowing that they are in big trouble after an 0-1 count (.141 average). He held opponents to a .199 batting average overall last season. Foulke is especially effective at Comiskey Park, where he converted all 23 save situations and compiled a 1.24 ERA in 2001. Defense Foulke is tough to run on, allowing only three stolen bases last season. He is a fundamentally perfect fielder and is confident enough in his pitching to always get the easy out, rather than try to force the action. He has made only one error over the last three seasons. If there was a Gold Glove for closers, he would be a strong candidate. |
